China has surpassed the United States in the competition for new technologies. According to Reuters, citing a study by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), Beijing is now leading in 37 of the 44 most important industries.
Despite the fact that the United States is leading in the field of high-performance computing, quantum computing, small satellites and vaccines, it has begun to give way to China in other areas. In particular, research on individual areas shows that the top 10 institutions in the world are now based in China. According to experts, this was achieved thanks to effective state programs.
Separately, China’s successes in the field of hypersonic missiles in 2021 are noted. Analysts believe that if the US academic community had paid attention to the research of Chinese experts, an unexpected breakthrough in this area could have been made before Beijing.
Note that the study was funded by the US State Department. The report emphasizes that Western countries are losing the global scientific race and they should increase investment in research.
